Dynamics AX 2012 R2 and stored procedures

Does anyone know definitively if you can use stored procedures with Dynamics AX reports for 2012 R2 and if so, how to do this?  I cannot find any definitive instructions on MSDN or Microsoft sites that show you stage by stage how to create an AX report using stored procedures as the data source and am wondering if in AX 2012 Microsoft are no longer endorsing this?
